Anindya Bikas Datta's debut directorial venture, Bonkubabu, is a story about a dilemma most modern Bengalis face living in nuclear families, away from the protected environment joint families offer.
In the absence of joint families, people are slowly becoming selfish. We keep the doors of our flats closed, trying to shut out the world. The problem has reached crisis point and everyone is aware of it.
Though the fast-changing parameters of life have forced us to seek the alternative, in our hearts, we hope the change was not that drastic. Bonkubabu is a humane drama that focuses on this problem in a lighter vein and helps us to relate with the crisis through fictitious characters. It's our problem. So, the solution has to come from us. Hence, the film, the director said.

Anindya, who has also penned the story and script of Bonkubabu, said, I cast the actors according to the story and I didn't compromise. After penning the character of Bonkubabu a honest and obstinate 70-year-old ex-cop, who has held the joint family together for many years I was sure that only Saswata Chatterjee could pull off the role."
But having decided on the character and getting Saswata on board brought up a different problem. We had to make Saswata look 70, and for that I needed a makeup artist who could do it. So, I took Dhananjay Prajapati on board who has worked in films like Dhoom 2 and Bhoothnath Returns, to name a few. And I must admit, he has done magic with Saswata's look. The shoot went on for a month and every day , it took three hours to do the makeup and two hours to remove it! But kudos to both Saswata and Dhananjay!" Anindya said with a smile.

Dhananjay, too, is happy to work in a Tolly project. Bengali films are doing so well now. They are bagging National Awards every year. I had a gala time shooting with such a friendly team. Anindya was very clear about what he wanted in Bonkubabu's look. So, my job was easy . Saswata also helped me, as he was very patient and never said a word for the three hours it took to finish his makeup. Moreover, I loved the maach-bhat we used to have for lunch!" he said.
Saswata Chatterjee, on the other hand, couldn't believe the mirror after the makeup. It was a challenging role, as I had to behave like a 70-year-old man. But I must say, Dhananjay did a stupendous job with my looks. And during the one month of shooting, I stayed at a hotel in Rajarhat, close to the shooting spot, as it used to take at least three-four hours to get into that look," the actor said.

The film also stars Rajatava Dutta, Arjun Chakrabarty, Arunima Ghosh, Laboni Sarkar, Rupa Bhattacharya and others in important roles and the music has been scored by Debajyoti Mishra.
Produced by Ashtami Films, Bonkubabu releases on June 20.
