Tamil Nadu UPSC topper cracked exams in Tamil

Jeyaseela secured the 45th rank in the country

Chennai: Answering all his papers in Tamil, V.P. Jeyaseelan of Genguvarpatti village near Periyakulam of Theni district emerged among the top rankers in the Civil Services final exams. He is the top ranker from Tamil Nadu while securing the 45th rank in the country.

The 26-year old agriculture graduate is particularly proud that he is the only candidate who took the exam in Tamil at a time when a debate is raging in the state over the wisdom of having Tamil as a compulsory subject in state schools.

He is presently undergoing training at the Income-Tax training academy at Nagpur after clearing the Indian Revenue Service last year and getting appointed as Assistant Commissioner in Income Tax.

“Now that I have scored a good rank, I am sure of being allotted to the IAS in my state cadre. I am thrilled that I would be able to serve my people. My father Palanichamy, (clerk in a cooperative society) will be particularly thrilled. It was he who had motivated me to handle these competitive exams in our mother-tongue”, Jeyaseelan told Deccan Chronicle in a phone interview.

“Tamil has all the ingredients for delivering success. I loved preparing in Tamil and I am proud at my success”, he said, adding that this was his fourth shot at the civil services. “I never lost confidence,” a proud Jeyaseelan said.

He has taken Tamil literature as his optional subject, besides general studies paper1,2&3, ethics and integrity in the civil services.
