Trawler sparks panic off atomic power station after running out of fuel

A trawler which was low on fuel anchored just a few kilometres off the Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) on Wednesday evening, creating panic in the area. Alert fishermen who were passing by informed the Satpati coastal police.

The TAPS is a No Fly Zone (NFZ) and also a sterile area, where rogue ships, trawlers are not allowed beyond 5 kms from the periphery of the nuclear power plant. The trawler even managed to evade the Indian navy, the coast guard patrol ships before anchoring.

API Harshvardhan Barwe of Satpati police station said, "The trawler's owner, Hanumanth Ekbote, a resident of Mumbadevi, called me and said that the trawler belonged to him. We examined the trawler's papers and then allowed Ekbote to refill the trawler."
