Two Madurai cops suspended after missing man was found dead

MADURAI: A police inspector and a special sub-inspector in Madurai district have been suspended for dereliction of duty after they failed to act on a complaint filed by a missing man’s wife.
When Ayyappan, a woodcutter and a native of Keelavalavu, did not return home after work on June 4, his wife filed a complaint with the Melur police. However, inspector of Melur police station Kumaravel Pandian and special sub-inspector Dhayalan failed to act the complaint by Ayyappan’s wife, Kalayani.
The missing man was later found dead in a well in the area. A man, identified as Mathivanan, surrendered before a judicial magistrate court on Wednesday and confessed to have murdered Ayyappan. Mathivanan and three others murdered Ayyappan after a fight.
Following Mathivanan’s confession, a departmental action was initiated against the police officers on Wednesday night. Deputy inspector general of police Anand Kumar Somani issued the suspension orders based on the recommendation of Madurai district superintendent of police Vijayendra S Bidari.
