Desperate to gain ground ahead of the assembly polls scheduled for October, the Congress-NCP government in the state has decided to fast-track a series of projects undertaken by the City & Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
Work has already started on the largest greenfield international airport in the country at a cost of Rs 14,573 crore, estimated to cater to about 60 million passengers a year. A majority of the clearances have been received.
According to Sanjay Bhatia, vice-chairman and managing director of CIDCO, Phase I flights are expected to start by December, 2018. A new city, Naina, is being developed over an area of 60,000 hectares around the new airport.
The corporation is also undertaking a 11-km metro project from Belapur to Pendhar at a cost of Rs2,111.51 crore and it is expected to be completed by May 2016. Work on the Nerul/Belapur-Uran railway project, with an estimated cost of Rs 1412.17 crore, is expected to be completed by 2016.
Sources there are proposals to put in place an elevated corridor from CST to Panvel and rail connectivity between Panvel and Uran. A second road link to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the government has set aside Rs200 crore for this, and three bridges on coastal road at Dronagiri at a cost of Rs 103 crore are also being developed.
Bhatia said a plan has been implemented to make all the processes of CIDCO completely transparent by posting information on the website. The corporation has prepared an action plan for development of 13 schools, four professional colleges, a degree college, 32 hospitals, 34 religious/spiritual centres and 77 social welfare centres at different nodes.
Also, a nature park is being developed over an area of 2,000 hectares in collaboration with the forest department at a cost of Rs36 crore.
