Woman tried blackmailing Nirma chief: Police

The police have not lodged any FIR in the case.

The Ahmedabad city police issued a release on Wednesday charging one Mamta Joshi, a resident of Shilaj area, of trying to blackmail Nirma Group chairperson Karsanbhai Patel by alleging that he had fathered one of her children.

The two-page release said that investigation pertaining to her complaint by ACP ‘M’ division concluded that “the applicant in this case has given different applications in different offices at different times, and an examination of the applications made on March 13, 18, 29, April 3, 15, 22, and May 17 suggest an attempt to extort money and property from Karsanbhai. A close examination shows them contradicting each other”.

The police note, citing her applications of April 3 and 15, stated that “in these applications, she has alleged that Karsanbhai had called her to Grand Maratha, Mumbai, in April 1999 and established physical relations with her. However, in her May 17 application to Joint Police Commissioner sector 1,  she had said that in April-May 2000, she had physical relations with him. These statements contradict
each other. Besides, the  investigation also revealed that the said hotel came  into existence only in  2001”.

The police have not lodged any FIR in the case.   The release added that “out of all the applications, Mamta mentioned about her daughter only in her April 3 application, saying that her second daughter was born of her relationship with Karsanbhai. She stated that the daughter was born on January 23, 2001. However, when the police checked records of the school where she studies, her birth certificate showed she was born on January 23, 2004”.

When contacted, inquiry officer ACP J D Jadeja of M division said, “I inquired with hotel manager for past records and they said the hotel, which is one of the well known chains in the country, was started only in 2001. We have checked other points she mentioned in her applications and it showed that she had a malafide intention to blackmail the industrialist to extort money. The complainant did not mention about her daughter in several applications, did not talk about her for 10 years; this raised suspicion regarding her intentions. After a thorough inquiry it was found that her  submission of applications, withdrawal of a few of  them, calling the police, threats of self immolation were all aimed at extorting money from the industrialist.” Calls to the Nirma PRO went unanswered.
