M S University debars examiner but no action against BMC dean
VADODARA: M S University has decided to debar Dr Gunvant Vaishnav, the examiner, who was found guilty in the MBBS marks scam. But the university has failed to take any action against the dean of Baroda Medical College A T Leuva, whose role has come under scrutiny in the scam.
In fact, Leuva has been completely let off the hook.
MSU's syndicate members took the decision of debarring Vaishnav, a faculty of the Gotri Medical College, as an examiner for MSU examinations for five years during their meeting on Tuesday.

The decision was taken on the basis of the inquiry report of Surat-based Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) which was tabled at the syndicate meeting.
The inquiry committee constituted by VNSGU had revealed that Leuva had allegedly asked Vaishnav to increase marks of a VNSGU student - Paresh Zala- in gynaecology papers.
VNSGU's report states that both Vaishnav and Zala have confessed that there was irregularity in the preparation of the result. Vaishnav had further accepted that he was the key instrument in carrying out this irregularity.
Based on this report, VNSGU had already debarred Vaishnav as examiner and had also decided not to assign him any work related to it. The Surat-based university has also filed a police complaint against Vaishnav and Zala while the student has been debarred from admission and examination in any medical course of VNSGU for five years.

MSU, however, has shown little action in connection to the entire scam that has rocked the medical fraternity of Gujarat.
When VNSGU report was tabled before the syndicate members, a syndicate member made a reference to Leuva's involvement in the scam. But a majority of syndicate members, who otherwise are known for their liking to constituting probe committees, did not demand any action against the dean.
The syndicate members turned a blind eye on Vaishnav's statement recorded by VNSGU's inquiry committee in which the faculty member had stated that it was at Leuva's behest that the marks of the third year student were altered.
The syndicate members also approved the minutes of the building committee which cleared the way for construction of major projects, including extension of the existing building; a new wing of Dr Vikram Sarabhai Block, Faculty of Science; construction of a new building at Faculty of Social Work and construction of roads in university quarters.
Common rules and regulations for various auditoriums and seminar halls of the university were approved along with appointment of temporary medical officer and other visiting doctors at university health centre.
