Batting for the opposite team? Jay-Z wears a Rodarte jersey designed for WOMEN while out in New York City

If Jay-Z were to play for a team, it wouldn’t be for his beloved Brooklyn Nets but rather for the womenswear label Rodarte, if an outfit he wore last week is any indication.

The rapper stepped out in a $405 ladies’ jersey while leaving a New York City office building with Beyonce on Wednesday.

The netted black T-shirt with blue-and-white lettering and a large ‘05’ representing the year Rodarte was founded, is sold through specialty stores like Opening Ceremony.

The 44-year-old's outfit led some to speculate if he had borrowed the jersey from his wife Beyonce, or if the brand had supplied the rapper with a larger size to fit his manly frame.

If he did in fact borrow it from Beyonce, however, it wouldn’t provide too much of a surprise.

On Sunday, the ‘Drunk in Love’ singer, 32, – who is about to embark on a joint stadium tour with her husband – arrived at a New York City heliport in a Rodarte hooded sweatshirt that cheekily reads ‘Radarte’.

In doing so the couple’s devotion to the nearly decade-old brand, which has been consistently celebrated by Vogue since its inception, became a family affair.

But what’s interesting about Jay-Z’s decision to wear the top is how he deliberately chose to wear this fashion jersey instead of a Tom Ford runway design from the designer’s fall 2014 collection.

Mr Ford’s jersey, produced to reciprocate the irony of a Jay-Z song written is his honor, bares the Tom Ford brand name in block lettering with smaller, crossed-out script reading ‘Molly’ below.

Original affiliation: While Jay-Z wore this Tom Ford jersey, created in honor of his song by the same name, he has not stuck to this single jersey uniform - already switching it up before Mr Ford's designs have hit store racks

Cheeky nod: The jerseys premiered on Mr Ford's runway in February, referencing a Jay-Z song written in his honor

The jersey, which premiered on Mr Ford’s runway in February, specifically references a lyric in Jay-S’s song that reads ‘I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford.’

While Jay-Z has been spotted in the jersey, specifically wearing it on vacation in February, his support of Rodarte’s shirt makes it clear that he is not a mad who believes in a single uniform - already switching it up before Mr Ford's designs have hit store racks.

Jay-Z and Beyonce’s On The Run tour kicks off on June 25 in Miami, Florida.
