Tune into some music for therapy
ALLAHABAD: Music has healing properties, claimed musicians and now, doctors at Beli\TB Sapru hospital too are singing the same tune. To make patients stress free, TB Sapru, known as Beli hospital authorities have introduced music therapy at six wards of the hospital.
In fact, TB Sapru hospital has become the first government hospital in the state to introduce music therapy wherein around 180 patients, undergoing treatment at six wards, are experiencing music therapy, also known as complimentary therapy.
Chief medical superintendent, TB Sapru hospital, Dr Suresh Dwivedi told TOI, "Life style diseases like diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and even in cardio vascular diseases, music therapy has been quite successful to treat patients to a great extent".
Dr Prabakar Rai says, "Music therapy can also reduce high blood pressure, depression and sleeplessness". In Alzheimer patients, music therapy was shown to significantly reduce anxiety and aggression. While there are no claims that music therapy can directly cure diseases like dementia, medical professionals believe that music can reduce certain symptoms, help with healing, improve physical movement, and enrich a patient's overall quality of life. A city-based psychiatrist said, "I had treated many patients suffering from anxiety and stress in past with music therapy and this helped them to soothe and rest their racing mind. For instance, instrumental, classical music, western - jazz, pop, rock, psychedelic and progressive music, have qualities to alleviate mood swings. These help increase the flow of alpha-waves in brain and lessen theta-waves (detected through EEG signals), hence making brain active.
