Congress picks IIM-B professor for RS

Both Krishna and Gowda belong to the dominant Vokkaliga community.

The Congress in Karnataka signalled a change of guard in its ranks on Monday by nominating a 50-year-old IIM professor Rajeev Gowda over 83-year-old veteran, former CM and External Affairs minister, S M Krishna, as one of its two candidates for elections to the Rajya Sabha from the state which is scheduled for June 19.

Krishna, who is a former governor of Maharastra as well, was overlooked as the Congress opted for Gowda, a professor of economics and social sciences at the IIM-B and the son of former Congress politician M V Venkatappa. Gowda has been a Congress spokesperson in recent times.

Both Krishna and Gowda belong to the dominant Vokkaliga community. Congress sources said that Krishna, who is set to retire from the RS on June 25, did not receive the Congress high command’s assent to file nominations primarily on account of his age. The Congress has, however, re-nominated B K Hariprasad, 59, another Rajya Sabha MP who is set to retire on June 25.

State Congress president G Parameshwar who is from the Krishna camp expressed surprise on the party overlooking the veteran leader. “I don’t know the reason for Krishna’s name being left out but the decision has hurt me,” Parameshwar said.

On the last day of filing nominations here on Monday AICC general secretary Hariprasad filed his nominations along with Professor Rajeev Gowda.

NIA arrests accused in UK Indian embassy attack last year

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday said they have arrested a man, a resident of the UK, in connection with the violence at the Indian High Commission in London during a protest last year. The accused, identified as Inderpal Singh Gaba, has been arrested for carrying out unlawful activities during the protests that took place on March 22, 2023.
