AIADMK MLA critical after attack
SIVAGANGA: M Gunasekaran (52), AIADMK MLA representing Manamadurai constituency in Sivaganga district was brutally attacked by a gang on Friday night.
M Gunasekaran suffered severe cut injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital in Madurai. Doctors have stated his condition to be critical as there were two deep cuts on his back and head in a sickle attack, police said. “There was a severe loss of blood.
He is in a highly critical state,” said a police officer.
Gunasekaran was standing in front of a shop at Manamadurai when a five-member gang on motorcycles attacked him with sickles and knives. As Gunasekaran collapsed in a pool of blood, the gang fled the spot in the motorcycles even as the public were stunned by the violent attack.
Manamadurai DSP S Velladurai said that it was too early to pinpoint the suspects and that the police are probing various angles to zero in on the suspects. Special teams have been formed to nab the assailants and all check-posts in the district have been alerted to prevent them from fleeing the district. Police suspect that a land dispute could be one of the motives for the attack.
Police said that Gunasekaran was monitoring an encroachment eviction drive at Manamadurai. A group of men had approached him to stop the eviction exercise as their buildings would be affected. Gunasekaran refused to oblige, though the men started arguing with him angrily. Since the encroachments were removed under police supervision the gang had left the place.
Moments later, there was a power cut in the locality when Gunasekaran was standing in front of a shop. Soon, the gang surrounded him and started attacking. Police say that they are inquiring if the gang that attacked Gunasekaran was linked to the men who picked up a quarrel with him earlier.
Gunasekaran was taken to the government hospital at Manamadurai and rushed to the private hospital in Madurai.
