MCG revises plan, now proposes two U-shaped underpasses near IFFCO Chowk

GURGAON: In keeping with its track record of making plans and then modifying them, the MCG has proposed a radical change in the design of upcoming underpass at IFFCO Chowk.
In a meeting with the project consultant, officials from NHAI and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), MCG commissioner Praveen Kumar selected a model that appeared unconventional to many officials within his department.

The consultant had come up with four design proposal to de-congest one of the biggest choke points that connects the two sides of the expressway.
The new plan, which MCG claimed was final, does away with the idea of an underpass at the existing intersection. Instead, two U-shape underpasses will be built on both ends of the IFFCO flyover.
Lack of adequate space to build a large underpass at the existing intersection has been cited as the main reason behind the latest change in the plan. "We studied all four plans submitted by the consultant and also discussed them with NHAI officials. Out of all the proposals so far, the most feasible one appears to be having an underpass each at both ends of the flyover. Once we finalize the plan, we will call the tenders soon," said Praveen Kumar, commissioner, MCG.
As per the proposal, traffic coming from old city to MG Road and vice versa will have to take a compulsory left turn after reaching the expressway and then take the U-shape underpass to reach the other side of the expressway.
The commissioner had asked DIMTS to come up with a plan that will cater to the traffic for the next 50 years. He has also asked them to integrate the future extension of both Rapid Metro and Delhi Metro in the plan. The commissioner is likely to hold a meeting with the same officials to discuss the flyover plan for Hero Honda Chowk sometime soon.
