CRICKET: WIPA/WICB salute Gayle as he approaches milestone

Explosive Jamaica and West Indies opener Chris Gayle was specially recognised last night at the West Indies Cricket Board/West Indies Players’ Association Annual Players Awards ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.



The 34-year-old Gayle was recognised by both the WICB and WIPA as he approaches his 100th Test match.



Gayle is expected to make his 100th Test appearance in Jamaica when the West Indies play New Zealand in the opening Test, starting on Sunday.



WIPA president Wavell Hinds made a special presentation to Gayle.



Meanwhile, Darren Bravo and Jamaican Stefanie Taylor were named West Indies Cricketers of the Year for 2013.



Trinidadian Bravo was also named Caribbean Twenty20 Cricketer of the Year, while his country man Sunil Narine was named West Indies Twenty20 International Player of the Year.



Dwayne Bravo, another Trinidadian, was named West Indies One-Day Player of the Year.



Shivnarine Chanderpual received the Test Player of the Year award, while Miguel Cummins received the Emerging Player of the Year award.



Nikita Miller of Jamaica was named the Regional four-day Player of the Year.
