NASHIK: NGO Godavari Gatarikaran Virodhi Manch flagged off its Green Kumbh programme on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday, along with Marathi actor Chinmay Udgirkar.
A 9-km cycle rally, tree plantation and lectures on environmental awareness were conducted on the occasion.
The activists, along with the actor, took an oath at Ramkund to clean Godavari river and then began with the cleaning activity.
They interacted with washerwomen, asking them not to wash clothes on the river banks.
"The Green Kumbh concept which was flagged off from today will continue even after the Kumbh mela gets over. Plastic-free Kumbh and keeping the river clean, among other issues, are on the agenda. We will also be writing to government officials and solicit their participation," said Rajesh Pandit, one of the environment activists.
Chinmay, who was born and brought up in Nashik, said, "My experience was on expected lines. While were creating awareness and talking to people, we got the usual response of citizens blaming the administration. Our aim is not to blame anyone but to make a beginning ourselves towards a green and clean city. We have to make people join the movement. I will always be involved in this clean Godavari mission with the NGO."
