CNN-IBN scores with Munde discussions

One woke up yesterday to the news that Gopinath Munde had met with an accident and predictably the news channels flashed it all day. Unlike brother-in-law Pramod Mahajan, Munde may not have had a national footprint, but he was a key leader for us journalists in Mumbai.

The 9 pm bulletins saw CNN-IBN come out tops with back-to-back discussions first on Munde and its impact on Maharashtra elections and two, on road safety and the need for stricter road safety rules.

Times Now stuck to the issue of the UP double gangrape and murder and took on Akhilesh Yadav. Perhaps Arnab didn’t find enough of a conspiracy theory in the Munde story. Or he figured he couldn’t put anyone in his pressure cooker on the show.

NDTV, on the other hand, had a discussion given 30 years of Operation Blue Star. Having hogged a fair bit of airtime after Rahul Gandhi’s interview on Times Now, it was an interesting theme to have, but wouldn’t a look at Munde’s life and times or a forecast of state politics and specifically the BJP leadership given the forthcoming Assembly elections.

I understand that it’s Maharashtra and not UP, but it’s the state which sends the second-largest number of Lok Sabha MPs: 48. As for Headlines Today, Karan Thapar ran a compact discussion on Munde, though I found the one on CNN-IBN better. Presenting the CNN-IBN primetime show was Bhupendra Chaubey, confirming the news that Ed-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai is indeed on chhutti.

I looked up Rajdeep's Twitter timeline for any giveaways of what he's up to, and this is what he posted: Life without having to be on air at 9: can watch Fox Crime at last!! And then: Liye sapne nigahon mein, chala hoon teri rahon mein, zindagi aa rahoon mein! An anthem for life. Kishoreda zindabad! Gnight, shubhratri.

Those who 'follow' @sardesairajdeep on Twitter know that he normally signs off with the lyrics of a retro Bollywood number. But it will be good to see where his dreams take him...
