ISLAMABAD:

Turkish cyclist and mountaineer Muharram Aydin Irmak Wednesday reached Islamabad.

Irmak had started his journey on bicycle on April 13. He intends to climb K2, world’s second highest mountain.

Irmak also met with the Turkish Ambassador S. Babur Girgin at his embassy.

Irmak has completed the first part of his journey on bicycle to Islamabad via East Beyazit, Iran and Afghanistan.  He claims that he is the first mountaineer in the world who has started his journey on bicycle to reach Pakistan to attempt K2.

Irmak said that seven international mountaineers are also accompanying him. They will form a 21-member group altogether including local mountaineers who would be providing them logistic support. He is the only Turkish national among the group who will lead the K2 expedition.  The expedition has not been provided any financial assistance by any company or organisation but with the moral contribution of his close friends and with his own savings, said Irmak.

He also said that he was hopeful to hoist the Turkish flag at the top of K2, which is the second highest mountain after Everest, but technically the most difficult expedition.

On this expedition, he said, he would go on bicycle to a possible point and then continue the climb keeping in view the difficulties that a human body and brain may endure on such expeditions by utilizing his past experiences to climb K2.
