The Fiji Pearls defeated Samoa in a close encounter 50-46 in their second match of the Pacific Netball Series in Rarotonga, yesterday.
Coach Julie Hoornweg said the Samoans were really tough and did not give up until the final whistle.
“I must say the girls played their hearts out and worked hard on defence,” she said.
“The Samoans gave us a little bit of fright throughout the whole four quarters. But I must applaud our Fijian girls who played really well.”
Team captain Matila Waqanidrola was injured in the second quarter but Hoornweg says she will be okay for the game against Papua New Guinea today.
“It was just a minor twist in the ankle, nothing serious and Matila will be ready to lead the girls again.
“We are halfway through to defending our title again and the girls are confident.”
Hoornweg believes that if Fiji continues with the same playing structure they will be able to overcome PNG today.
“We respect PNG but our girls are fantastic.”
Fiji will meet Samoa again in the second round on Saturday.
It was an exciting battle throughout as Fiji led 14-9, 29-20, 42-41 and 50-46.
