Now, two girls face trouble over issuance of passports

The RPO said the girls had his “sympathy”, but he was bound to follow rules.

Two teenagers, who are among the 10 girls facing eviction from their Mumbai flat, allegedly on account of being children of Kamathipura sex workers, are facing fresh trouble over issuance of their passports. Both the girls, whose education is funded by an NGO, are the only Indian participants to travel to the US and UK for their respective educational programmes.
The girls, both aged 13, at present reside in a three-bedroom flat in Kandivali, along with eight other girls and two NGO staffers. While one of them has been selected for a six-week dance, theatre and music programme in Minnesota, US, the other girl is slated to attend a four-week international English-speaking workshop in the UK. After three weeks of rehearsals in Minnesota, the girl is set to travel to other states in the US.

Robin Chaurasiya, co-founder of Kranti, the NGO that supports the girls, has been able to raise $ 2,500 and has bought the girl’s air tickets. “The programme is scheduled to begin on June 15, and the non-issuance of her passport is the only obstacle. The US consulate is willing to give her the visa in a day if she gets her passport,” she said.

The other teenager’s workshop will begin on June 28, and Euros 2,000 of the total cost of Euros 3,000 for the programme was waived off by the organisers, Chaurasiya said.

“While the girl headed for the US is the only Indian among participants from 20 different countries, the one selected for the UK programme is the only participant from outside Europe to attend the camp,” she added. On Wednesday, Chaurasiya accompanied both the girls to the Regional Passport Office. During a meeting with Regional Passport Officer T D Sharma, Chaurasiya informed the official that she, along with the girls, had been running from pillar to post.

“The Malad passport officials have been continuously making us run without specifically telling us what documents they require. Their family background and absence of documents showing their fathers’ identities is causing a hurdle in the issuance of their passports,” said Chaurasiya.

Festive offer

After checking the status of one of their passports online, Sharma pointed out that police verification report had not been updated on the government website. In the case of the other girl, Sharma said, “We do require all the documents no matter how sensitive the cases are. I have given her another appointment on Friday with the Malad office. She is required to produce the prescribed documents and she should be accompanied by her mother.”

The RPO said the girls had his “sympathy”, but he was bound to follow rules. “There is no specific instruction for such cases,” he told Newsline.
