The ancient bridge, built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), was torn down early in the morning of May 1. Five other people, including the labor contractor and excavator operator, were also detained.



Yunnan Services resumein quake zone Power and telecommunications services have resumed in Yingjiang county after a magnitude-6.1 earthquake on Friday. The county's earthquake relief headquarters said that by Monday only 12 of the 43 people injured in the quake remained hospitalized, and 45,732 people had been evacuated after their homes were damaged.

Hebei 3 drown duringbarbecue trip Three male college students drowned in Handan, China News Service reported on Monday. The trio, from Hebei University of Engineering, were having a barbecue near a river on Sunday evening when one of them fell into the water. The other two jumped in to try to save him, but all three drowned.


Jiangsu Chengguan helpmelon farmers Chengguan, or urban management officers, in Nanjing's Liuhe district are helping farmers to sell watermelons, Jiangnan Times reported on Monday. The officers have provided 71 stalls for melon farmers, and more than 100 metric tons of melons have been prepared for the market since May 1. However, due to a lack of sales channels, many of the melons have either rotted or been used as pig feed.

Shandong Halt to fishing begins for Bohai, Yellow seas The annual fishing ban in the Bohai and Yellow seas started on Sunday and will last until Sept 1, one month longer than in previous years, China News Service reported. For enhanced surveillance, border patrol in Yantai will use for the first time marine radar, which will let guards monitor the seas 24 hours a day.

2 killed, 23 hurtin road accident Two people were killed and 23 injured when a bus slammed into a guardrail and rolled over on a highway in Qingdao on Sunday, China News Service reported on Monday. The injured were taken to the hospital, and the driver was in police custody. Police are investigating.

Giant swordfishcaught before ban A fisherman in Qingdao caught a giant swordfish on Saturday, one day before a fishing ban took effect in the city's coastal waters, local media reported. The 2.1-meter-long fish weighed more than 110 kg, Peninsula Metropolis Daily reported. It was sold to a vendor at a seafood market for about 3,000 yuan ($480).

Heilongjiang Fireworks mishapleaves 14 injured Fourteen people were hospitalized after a fireworks accident at a geology park, China News Service reported on Monday. The accident on Sunday night at the Wudalianchi scenic area in Heihe happened when a firework changed course and exploded in midair, dropping fireballs onto people below, the local publicity department said. A staff member suspected of misconduct has been placed under police control.

Hubei Man kills threebefore death leap A man in Tianmen killed his wife, her aunt and the mother of his wife's close friend before jumping to his death from a 10-story building, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported on Monday. The man, 25, killed his wife on Friday after a dispute. They had been married for less than six months. He then went to the home of a close friend of his wife's and killed her mother before driving to a residential area where he killed his wife's aunt before jumping from the building.

Qinghai Officer charged after wrong suspect detained Prosecutors in Xining charged a police officer with dereliction of duty for arresting the wrong suspect, which could result in a three-year prison term, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Monday. Zhang Junzhi, a policeman from Xining, arrested Liu Li at a railway station in Leiyang, Hunan province, on Nov 24, accusing Liu of being involved in a theft case in 2012, which Liu denied. After detaining Liu for 12 days, police found Liu's identity document had been stolen by Li Fang, her sister-in-law, and announced the mistake to the public.

Sichuan Scores of touriststrapped by floods More than 140 tourists were trapped by flooding at a scenic area in Luzhou on Monday, local media reported. No casualties had been reported by Monday afternoon, local news portal lzep.cn said. Rescuers brought between 70 and 80 tourists to safety. The flooding also hit Zihuai scenic area early on Monday, sweeping away several vehicles, the report said.

Students' bodiesfound in river Rescuers retrieved the bodies of four primary school students in Guangyuan from a river on Monday more than 24 hours after they went missing, China News Service reported. The boy and three girls disappeared after school on Saturday. One of the children's school bags was found by a man fishing in the Jialing River.

The woman's father and mother, Zhou Xuecai, from Yueqing, divorced when she was 4, and her father was granted custody. Since then, Zhou had been looking for her daughter. In March, Zhou finally found her daughter, who said she lived in the nunnery for 10 years and then went to Huangshi, Hubei province, for work.
