Agra CJM frees record 149 undertrials
AGRA: Agra's chief judicial magistrate Khaliquzzama made a record of sorts on Saturday when he ordered the release of 149 undertrials who had been languishing in jails and did not have lawyers to represent them.
Through his order, the chief judicial magistrate surpassed a Delhi judge who had released 134 undertrials in one go.
All those released on Saturday were charged under pity offences.
A majority of these prisoners were set free after taking into consideration their family , finance and health conditions.
Famous for releasing undertrials awaiting justice in the absence of legal representatives, Khaliquzzama had freed 75 prisoners during his tenure in Meerut in 2008.
Talking to TOI, he said hundreds of undertrials are awaiting justice in various jails due to lack of resources and legal representation.
