Woman killed after TTE ‘pushes’ her off train

At around 6 am Thursday, when the was at the Jalgaon railway station, Ujjwala Pandya (32), a resident of Balaji Peth, went to board the train to travel to Khandwa. She was accompanied by her two daughters and her nephew Rahul Purohit, who was there to drop them off.

“Ujjwala’s daughters got on the train first. The train started just as she was getting on. She started running to get into her coach and Salunke was standing at the door. While trying to board the train, she fell under it and was run over. Rahul has said in his statement that Salunke pushed her, which resulted in her death,” sub inspector M D Pardeshi of the Bhusaval railway police said.

Following the incident, Rahul raised an alarm and the train was stopped. While Salunke was initially unwilling to step out of the train, a crowd dragged him out, assaulted him and handed him over to the police.

The police took Salunke into custody and sent him for a medical check up so his blood samples could be taken as the crowd had alleged he was drunk. Salunke has been charged him with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the IPC. He will be produced before the court on Friday, police said.

When asked about the CCTV footage of the incident, Pardeshi said, “We have not seen the footage yet. We have put in a formal request asking for it. Once we examine it, the picture will be clear.”

Meanwhile, Salunke’s daughter Snehal, a kabaddi player who featured in India’s gold medal winning team at the Asian Games in 2010, rubbished reports suggesting her father was under the influence of alcohol. “They took a medical test and the results were clear. There is no way he was drunk,” she said.
