Network equipment provider ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says it is supplying its Total Access 5004 multiservice platform to broadband services provider Comporium Communications to enable delivery of 1-Gbps services in Rock Hill, SC. Comporium has partnered with the City of Rock Hill, Winthrop University, and other community entities to create a “Knowledge Park” as part of a community economic development project. The project will use a variety of fiber-optic network technologies, ADTRAN sources say.

Rock Hill officials hope creation of the gigabit-enabled Knowledge Park in the city’s historical district, in connection with the proximity of Winthrop and existing “knowledge economy” businesses, will attract high-tech businesses such as website and software developers and 3D printing services providers to the community. Comporium will deliver its newly announced 1-Gbps Zipstream service as part of the effort, using the Total Access 5004, ADTRAN says.

Comporium will leverage the Total Access 5004 to support use of a variety of fiber-optic network technologies in Rock Hill, according to a source affiliated with ADTRAN. These include GPON for residential and small to medium enterprise (SME) fiber to the premises (FTTP) applications, Carrier Ethernet, and ADTRAN’s ONE optical transport capabilities for middle-mile requirements.

“Rock Hill is a community with a vision to grow as a hub for knowledge economy businesses,” said Comporium’s Matt Dosch, senior vice president of external affairs, via a press release. “With that mindset, Comporium has worked closely with our partners in the community to ensure that we are providing the infrastructure to support Rock Hill’s Knowledge Park strategy. Our discussions with leaders in other gigabit communities around the country reinforced our desire to offer very high-speed Internet services to attract new companies, as well as give existing companies a competitive advantage in the new information economy. ADTRAN’s broadband platform enables us to achieve this goal with our Zipstream gigabit services today and gives us peace-of-mind knowing we have a solution that will scale as the area continues to grow.”

According to the source, Comporium is turning up services this week. This multi-year project is part of a program between Comporium and ADTRAN that could last as long as 10 years, the source added.
