Matthijs Wouter Knol to head Berlin’s film market

The Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) has named Matthijs Wouter Knol (pictured) as the new head of its European Film Market, replacing Beki Probst, who moves into the newly created role of president of the market.

Knol, a Dutch native, has worked as program manager of the Berlinale Talents (formerly the Berlinale Talent Campus) film school since 2008.

Prior to that he worked in the coproduction and sales markets for the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and launched the festival’s IDFAcademy Summer School training program. He also developed and produced documentaries for Amsterdam-based prodco Pieter van Huystee Film.

In her new role, Probst will help establish Knol as the new head and provide support and advice. He will take over the position on June 1.

“Matthijs Wouter Knol will inspire new areas of business and the development of the European Film Market,” said festival director Dieter Kosslick in a statement. “With Knol, a professional is joining us who knows the festival well. He will strategically strengthen the synergies that have developed between the festival and the EFM.”
