Being tall is troublesome for these TV actresses
While height is generally considered to be an asset, these television stars beg to differ and tell us why it’s is a bane…
Shraddha Musale She is often asked to remove her heels so that her co-actors don’t look short. “When they pair me with someone on the shorter side, it poses a problem,” she says. However, the actress prefers to look at the positive side.
“My height sets me apart from other actresses. I may not fit the girl-next-door image, but I certainly make heads turn,” she says. Her height, Shraddha points out, is a cause of concern for friends and family. “They say, ‘Anna height no chhokro kyan thi shodhvano?’ (Where will we find a guy who can match her height?). Even men would tell me, ‘Thodi height de dijiye please’.” The actress feels her contemporaries are jealous of her. “Most of us want to be taller than we are; for women, being tall has become something to covet,” she concludes.

Kavita Kaushik The actress is all for tall men. She says, “With all due respect to short men, I can never date a guy my height. He has to be tall enough to make me stand on my toes to kiss him. A great height speaks volumes about one’s personality and a tall person exhibits a magnetic persona.” Kavita loves her heels and can walk in them even on a beach. On people’s reaction to her height, the actress says, “Some guys used to tease me by singing Khambe jaisi khadi hai when I was in the 12th standard. My co-actors, Kiku Sharda and Gopi Bhalla — who aren’t that tall — call me Qutub Minar ki beti. My friends request me not to wear heels or they would look like midgets in front of me.”
Aishwarya Sakhuja Aishwarya says she faces a lot of trouble because of her height. “Most of my co-actors are of my height or shorter. As a result, my romantic scenes turn out to be hilarious. For example, if a scene requires me to rest my head on my co-star’s chest or shoulder, I have to bend my knees. Or else, my co-actor is asked to stand on a stool. Wearing heels is a luxury for me,” she says.
In her last show Saas Bina Sasural, the unit even introduced a concept in the storyline, banning all actors from wearing footwear inside the house (read set). “All of us had to keep getting pedicures. Because of me, everyone had to walk barefoot on dirty floors,” the actress recalls. That’s not it. Her fiance’ Rohit Nag has nicknamed her Lambootri. “He has categorically asked me not to wear heels on our wedding day, saying he won’t show up,” she says.

Gauahar Khan Recently, on a comedy show on TV, Sushmita Sen recalled how Salman Khan had encouraged her to wear heels during the shoot of Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. He had told her, “You carry your height and I will carry mine.” Gauahar seconds this thought. She says, “That was a real nice thing to say. Somehow, I look taller than I actually am. Wooden platforms come handy during a scene with a not-so-tall co-actor. Also, guys wear elevated shoes, which make them appear taller.” The actress adds how her height helped her in school. “I was the discipline minister and guys used to feel intimidated by me,” she laughs.

Sargun Mehta Height-related problems have haunted Sargun ever since she was a child. Recalls she, “I was in class eight, participating in a skit with a guy two inches shorter than me. He was made to wear shoes with extra heel, while I was asked to go barefoot. However, I forgot to remove my shoes and our considerable height difference was visible. To top it, I was wearing a hat also. My classmate was embarrassed to the extent that the very next day, he joined a swimming class as he was told that it helps increase one’s height.”
The actress adds, “Once an avid viewer of Phulwa came up to me along with her 16-year-old daughter, asking for tips to increase her height. I told them it was genetic, but they were in no mood to buy it.” As expected, the actress never wears heels during the shoot.
Kamya Punjabi “My height has always been a problem both on and off screen. It has fetched me more sarcastic comments than compliments. I have always had to adjust to match the height of my co-actors. Despite my love for heels, I could never wear them on screen,” says Kamya. However, falling for a tall guy is not mandatory for her. “I am more of an emotional person and don’t go for vital stats. But it’s a task to dress up and zero in on shoes when I am going out with a person who isn’t very tall. Also, being thin, I tend to look taller than I actually am. They call me hanger or ‘maachis ki kaadi’ (matchstick). I would like to put on some weight to not let my height overpower my personality.”
