MADURAI: For M Ramkumar, being a blind person was not at all a hindrance to perform better in the studies. He secured 469 marks in the SSLC exam with the highest score of 95 in English. He managed to secure the marks with the help of scribes, Braille materials, audio equipment and special teachers. In fact, the absence of eyesight helped him to concentrate more on his studies, says Ramkumar who studied at the Indian Association for the Blind (IAB) in Sundararajanpatti on the outskirts of Madurai.

Like Ramkumar, several blind students have secured good competitive marks. The school's overall marks percentage is even competitive with regular schools. The students fetched a pass percentage of 82.5. As many as 31 students who appeared this year passed the exam. This is the 19th consecutive year the school has produced 100% result. Although it was challenging despite help from teachers and the facilities available at the institute the school managed to achieve this feat, the school authorities said. Ramkumar, son of a daily wage labourer from Arulachi near Sankarankovil in Tirunelveli district said, "I have not seen the world since my birth. But it did not deter me from scoring marks. The training and help provided by the school helped me score on a par with normal students. I want to become a teacher."
M Shalini, another blind student, who is the daughter of a daily wage labourer from Devaram in Theni district made her family proud by scoring a centum in Social Science. "I have never felt that my disability was hindering my studies. In fact being blind helped me dedicate more time for my studies. There was ample study materials and guidance from the teachers. I want to pursue political science and want to be employed in the banking sector," she said.
Three more students apart from Ramkumar managed to secure high marks. P Pandiaraj and S Banupriya scored 461 marks each while B Karthick Raja scored 457 marks.
