St. Joseph’s Sports Academy tallied 248 points for the overall championship in the 87th Tamil Nadu State athletics championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday. Two records were set on the final day. L. Suriya, who erased the 10,000m record on Friday, completed a sweet double clinching the women’s 5000m gold with a record timing of 16:47.2s.
N. Shankar was the other record-breaker of the day. Trained at the Perumal Ramasamy Foundation in Chennai, the 22-year-old heaved the hammer to a new distance of 59.50m.
R. Surendhar, who set a new 110m hurdles record on the opening day, and S.N. Mohammed Salahudin (triple jump) were declared the best athletes in the men’s section. Saratha Narayana of Southern Railway, who equalled the 100m meet record, emerged the best in the women’s section.
