Road mishap victim dies in hospital, family claims X-ray unit part fell on him

The family of a Central Railway employee, who died at Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali where he was admitted after being knocked down by a BEST bus, has alleged that he was killed when a part of an x-ray machine fell on him.

Early on Wednesday, Borivali (east) resident Sukhdev Seth, 53, was on his way to work when the bus rammed into him on Carter Road no 9. The bus driver and conductor, who informed his family of the mishap, rushed him to hospital.

“He was brought to the Casualty Ward at 6.15 am. Since he had suffered from a contusion on the back, he was referred for an x-ray immediately,” said Dr Mangesh Budhkar, medical superintendent at Shatabdi.

According to Seth’s brother, Uttam, two x-ray images had already been taken, and it was when the technician was taking the third when the hydraulic tube weighing around six kg suddenly came loose and fell on the patient.

“My brother was lying on his side. The tube fell on his hip,” said Uttam, adding that Seth was then rushed back to the Casualty Ward, where the doctors declared him dead. Seth’s relatives believe that the sudden impact caused by the falling tube may have led to his death as he was already injured badly in the road mishap.

The hospital has now initiated an inquiry into the matter. “We have already questioned the x-ray technician. In his statement, he has said that the tube slipped but did not hit the patient at all. The patient was badly injured when he was brought in,” said Budhkar.

Seth’s body was taken to Bhagwati Hospital for post mortem, and the report stated the cause of death as profuse internal bleeding due to severe liver injury.

“There were no external injuries except for a few abrasions on his right thigh. He had suffered severe liver injury when the bus hit him, which led to internal bleeding,” said a doctor from the post mortem centre.

Shatabdi Hospital, now known as Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital, was renovated and re-opened last year. Two weeks ago, an x-ray technician was injured when a portion of the ceiling of the same x-ray room fell on her head.

“The hospital has been renovated recently at a cost of over Rs 115 crore. The civic authorities should initiate action against on such shoddy work which risks the life of patients and hospital staff,” said a doctor who works in the hospital.
