Garbage in Yogyakarta to be Processed into Renewable Energy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garbage in the Final Waste Disposal in Piyungan, Bantul, Yogyakarta, will be processed to become renewable energy. Garbage that is sent to the District Government and Yogyakarta to Piyungan should be separated. The garbage separation will be organic and non-organic, and also poisonous waste material. "If the District and the City does not perform a separation, they will be charged with a penalty," said Head of Public Works Department, Ranni Syamsinarsi, in Purosani, Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, May 20 2014.

The instruction of garbage separation has been set in the Yogyakarta Regional Regulation No.3 Year 2013 concerning Garbages and the Regional Regulation No.2 Year 2013 concerning Waste. The regulation is to welcome the delivery of the Final Waste Disposal Piyungan processing from the regional government to the provincial government of Yogyakarta. "So the region will care about their garbage processing," said Ranni.

The Provincial Government of Yogyakarta allocated a three year time since the two Regional Regulations have been officiated. The garbage separation is also to ease the garbage processing by using the technology from Sweden. The hope is that garbages in Piyungan could be recycled and becoming a renewable energy. "The garbage processing technology from Sweden is considered close to the characteristics of Indonesian garbages. This is the result of our studies in Europe last year," said Ranni.

According to Ranni, the problem is that there are many scavengers and livestock cows that take advantages of Piyungan Final Waste Disposal to get profits. There are around 400 scavengers and 500 cows there. "Once the garbage processing technology exist, they must leave. This matter should also be considered," said Ranni. Other problem is that Piyungan Final Waste Disposal is close to residences. Ranni hopes that with the technology established later on, will not disturb the residents in the surrounding area.

This conference is a part of the United Europe-Indonesia Trade-Cooperation Facility Programme.  The Ambassador of United Europe, Olof Skoog, said that United Europe could unite European companies with several Indonesian City Government.  The investment project reaches US$10 to 12 million. "Don't see the value of the investment, but look at it as several garbages as a renewable energy," said Skoog.
