There couldn’t have been a better way to celebrate Buddha Purnima. On the day that marks Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, a commemorative stamp celebrating 999 years of the Drukpa lineage was released by the Department of Posts. The Gyalwang Drukpa, spiritual head of the Drukpa Buddhists said, “Drukpa Buddhists see it as recognition of their efforts towards education, women’s empowerment and environment protection.”

The stamp depicts Hemis Monastery, seat of the Drukpa lineage that follows tantric Vajrayana teachings. Set in the rugged mountains of Leh, Ladakh, the monastery stands in detached and calm poise, telling the faithful to get over impermanent, material life and strive for enlightenment. The monastery believed to have been established in the 11th century, is known for its annual Hemis Festival.
