Robert Pattinson Too Old for Twilight?

Robert Pattinson believes that he is now too old for Twilight. It certainly makes sense considering the character is supposed to remain 17-years-old throughout the series. If there are anymore installments, which are not planned yet, then the producers would have no choice but to find someone younger.

This is a situation that shows and movie franchises have when it comes to characters that do not age. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel had the issue of David Boreanaz and James Masters getting, and looking, older throughout the series run. When watching the first season of Buffy and the last season of Angel there is a clear difference, but nothing can stop the natural process of aging.

Pattinson is now 28-years-old, and will find it very difficult even with makeup to look the part of a 17-year-old. There is no way of getting around it in the storyline either, and there is a point where it becomes unreasonable to ask fans to imaging the actor as a younger man throughout the movie.

Chances are there will be no more Twilight movies. There are certainly no more books for now. The last books the author Stephanie Meyers was considering was the initial book told from Edward Cullen’s point of view, which would bring in the storyline with the Alaskan vampires. She had finished telling Bella Swan’s story. There are slim chances that new movies will be made, so Pattinson would not need to worry that he is now too old for Twilight.

If there are other books, they will likely be told from Jacob Black’s point of view as he grows up with Edward and Bella’s miracle daughter, Renesmee. This would not even need Edward Cullen to appear again. He could just be mentioned, which would take out the issue of Pattinson getting older and no longer wanting to play the role.

However, there is the issue of Taylor Launter, who plays Jacob. This is another character that can choose not to age by still turning into his wolf form. There would also be a later issue of whoever would play Renesmee, who would need to stop aging after turning 18—and the aging up to that point is rapid.

Some shows and movie franchises do manage the lack of aging on screen relatively well. The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals have not yet had problems with the majority of its characters being vampires that cannot age. When watching season one of The Vampire Diaries and the latest season, there are only subtle signs that the actors are actually aging. However, there would still be a point where this would become unfeasible.

At the time of filming the first movie, Pattinson and his co-stars never expected the movie to do so well. They expected it to remain an indie movie similar to director Catherine Hardwick’s first movie Thirteen. If that was the case, there would not be so many upset fans hearing that Pattinson will never come back to Twilight because he believes he is now too old for the role.

  1. They can make him look younger. Look at Orlando Bloom in The Hobbit. It’s movie magic 🙂
