‘Sewage discharged into Ulhas, Waldhuni rivers untreated’

Out of the 90 MLD sewage generated from the Ulhasnagar, 80 MLD is directly discharged without any treatment through a local nullah.

While 100 per cent of the sewage generated from the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) and Kulgaon- Badlapur Municipal Council (KBMC) are discharged without any treatment into the Ulhas and Waldhuni rivers through nullahs, the percentage of untreated sewage being discharged by Kalyan-Dombivali municipal corporation (KDMC) and Ambernath municipal council (AMC) into these rivers stands at 80 and 72 per cent respectively, finds a report of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

According to the report filed by MPCB, out of the 90 MLD sewage generated from the Ulhasnagar, 80 MLD is directly discharged without any treatment through a local nullah into the Waldhuni river, and 10 MLD is discharged without any treatment through Khemani nullah into the drinking water zone of Ulhas river.
Similarly, at Kulgaon- Badlapur, a total of 18 MLD sewage that is generated goes directly into the Ulhas river, through a local nullah without any treatment.

The situation at the highly populated Kalyan-Dombivli and Ambernath areas is no different. According to reports, in KDMC area, of the total 200 MLD sewage generated, only 40 MLD is treated and disposed off. The remaining sewage is discharged into local nullahs up to Ulhas creek.

Of the total 43 MLD generated from Ambernath municipal, 31 MLD is discharged without any treatment through a local nullah into Waldhuni river, MPCB found.

Besides poor sewage disposal practices, these civic bodies do not adequately treat all the solid waste generated and, in some cases, dump them at unauthorised locations.

Festive offer

This has been going on despite a BombayHigh Court April 2013 order, directing all local bodies to provide secured landfill site and processing plant for municipal solid waste within a specified time.

The MPCB found that while the total 320 MT municipal solid waste generated per day from Ulhasnagar is dumped at an unauthorised site without processing, the 550 MT/day municipal solid waste generated from Kalyan-Dombivli is dumped at Adharwadi site, which is also an unauthorised site in CRZ.
