An influential American Jewish group has congratulated prime minister-designate Narendra Modi on his electoral victory and hoped that under his leadership, India’s ties with the US and Israel will strengthen further.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) said it has engaged for years with successive Indian governments, regardless of party identity, on matters of common interest and concern.

“We look forward to working with Modi and the new government to further strengthen and deepen India’s extensive relations with the United States and Israel,” said Shira Loewenberg, director of AJC’s Asia Pacific Institute (API).

BJP has long been a friend to Israel and the Jewish people,” Loewenberg said in a statement.

The group said it has worked closely with India’s vibrant Jewish community, numbering about 4,500 – including 150 from Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

Festive offer

AJC congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on its victory in India’s general elections.

An API delegation had met with Modi in 2012, when he served as chief minister of Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Overseas Congress, US (INOC) congratulated Modi and the BJP on the election victory and expressed hope that the incoming BJP-led government would “continue to safeguard the democratic and secular fabric” of
the India and work towards unity and purpose where all its citizens are treated equally regardless of their caste.

The Congress party, which faced its worst electoral performance due to corruption and slow economic growth, would remain resilient and bounce back quickly, INOC chairman George Abraham said in a statement.
