Arjun Iyer, among ISC toppers, prefers pure science

Pass percentage in state 96.86; last year it was 97.29

Arjun Iyer, a student of Lilavati Podar Senior Secondary School, Santacruz scored 98.8 per cent in Science stream of the ISC examinations, the results of which were declared on Saturday.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) declared the ISC results at 3pm on Saturday.

Arjun who is one among the toppers, said: "I am happy with my score and give all the credit to my mother and my teachers who were always there for me."

He believes in studying on his own, and never joined any coaching classes. Iyer said: "I studied on my own with the help of my teachers. I regularly attended classes and that helped me. I wish to take up Bachelor of Science (Physics). I didn't write any entrance exams as I am keen on taking pure science. Yeah, the website was not working, and I saw my result only at 6pm though I was here from 3pm.

This year the pass percentage across the country is 95.27, a little better than last year's 95.15. In all, 68,723 students (37,558 were boys and 31,165 girls) appeared for examination across the country, and 193 students with special learning abilities also took the exam. The number of schools which presented candidates in the India & Abroad examination was 868.

Exams were held in 48 subjects, that included 14 Indian languages, 5 foreign languages and 3 classical languages.

The southern region had the best pass percentage, 98.32, followed by west (95.74%). Over 50% of those who appeared for the exam from the southern region were girls. And this year, girls with 96.58 pass percentage did better than boys (94.18%). Overall 2,186 boys and 1,065 girls didn't pass.

From Maharashtra, students from 34 schools wrote the exam, of this, 941 were boys and 906 girls. Pass percentage in the state is 96.86; last year it was 97.29. In the state too, girls (97.9%) did better than boys (95.86%)--887 girls and 902 boys got through.

The results were declared at 3pm, but most students had an anxious time as till around 6pm, few had got their result in hand. Yamini Shah (name changed), the mother of a student from central suburb, said: "I have been here since 3pm trying to get the result of my son. But the site is not opening. He went to the school to see if it had been published there, but the school was closed.

Gerry Arathoon, CICSE, chief executive, said: "The website is still not working, and we are working on it. This year the pass percentage is better than last year."
