ALLAHABAD: Pall of gloom descended in the Congress camp at Phulpur as the party candidate Mohammad Kaif lost to BJP nominee Keshav Prasad Maurya by a huge margin. Kaif, who secured around 57,373 votes, stood fourth in the counting process till the last reports came in.
Kaif, who was fielded by Congress to reap the benefit of huge Muslim voters in the constituency failed to muster commanding support and polled just 50,000 votes.
However, the cricketer-turned-politician said that he will continue to work for the people of his constituency. "Politics will be my first priority and I will continue to serve the people of my constituency," Kaif said at Mundera Mandi."It is my dream to set up an international cricket stadium in Allahabad. This would put Allahabad on international cricket map," he said. Kaif, who rose to stardom with his match-winning knock against England in the Natwest trophy final at Lords in 2002, said the people did take him well politically but he would continue to work for Phulpur and the country.
"I think the people will appreciate my work but in field of politics, I would have to work hard more," said Kaif, who has played 13 Test and 125 one-dayers.
Kaif appreciated the love and affection showered on him by locals in his hometown. Asked if he will continue to carry on with cricket, Kaif who is playing for Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy said: "I will try to carry on both cricket and politics."
