Does using an e-reader cause eye strain?
A lot has been written about which medium is better to read e-books - an e-reader versus reading books on an LCD screen tablet. And which causes more strain to your eyes.
The big claim that manufacturerers of eReaders make is that there is no backlight on the e-reader screen, and hence, no glare to irritate the eyes. However, according to study reports published in medical journals abroad, it has been found that reading an ebook on an e-reader in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, can cause your eyes to strain, as the eyes try to receive more light.
In that case, how do you read your favourite books electronically without causing eye strain?
- Practise good posture. Hold the screen at a certain distance slightly below eye level and try not to get into a hunched-up posture which can be bad for your back.
- Do not read in a place where there is harsh overhead light. Warm, soft lighting is usually a good idea.
- If you wear glasses, put them on while reading. It will eliminate eye strain.
- Finally, take frequent breaks every 20 minutes or so.
