IMPHAL:An 18-year-old youth was accidentally shot at by the police in Imphal, triggering tension among locals.
The youth was being interrogated inside a jeep for his alleged role in a police vehicle theft when the bullet was accidentally fired at him.
The Manipur Muslim Council (MMC) has sought punishment for the guilty and adequate compensation.
The youth, Muhammad Rashid aka Boycha of Kwakta village in Bishnupur district, was picked up by the police from the Hatta area in Imphal in connection with a vehicle theft.

While he was being quizzed inside a bullet-proof jeep, one of the commandos accidentally fired a bullet at his chest, a source said. He was rushed to the private Shija Hospital here where he is battling for his life.
The youth was charged with vehicle theft by the police. He had apparently stolen the vehicle from the parking area of a private hospital near North AOC here a few days ago.
"Any crime committed by an individual should be tried and punished by a court of law. The cops cannot take law into their own hands," MMC general secretary Hajir Arafat Ali said on Thursday.

"The guilty commandos should be given a fitting punishment for their negligence and highhandedness," said the MMC leader.
The council members will visit the boy at the hospital where he is being treated in the intensive care unit.
The All Manipur Muslim Students' Organization (AMMSO) also demanded immediate action against the commandos.
"We will submit a memorandum to the government on Thursday evening," said AMMSO president Md Farid Khan.
The incident happened barely two months after a man was found dead in a suspicious manner in police custody in Imphal West. The family of the deceased had accused the police of torturing the individual.
