A Delhi University professor was arrested on charges of molesting a college student on Wednesday evening. Police said the incident was reported from Dyal Singh College in Lodhi Colony around six months ago. A case had been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station and police were investigating the case.
Police said the accused professor was on medical leave since the day the FIR was registered. On Wednesday afternoon, he reported for work at the college, which triggered protests on the campus. The Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women Barkha Singh met protesters and, following this, the professor was arrested. He was produced before a magistrate on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody.
Police sources said an inquiry in the case had been conducted by a woman IPS officer. Police said they had also recorded the statement of other students who were known to the victim.
Sources in the college said the victim, a third-year student of the college, had alleged that she was molested by the professor on November 14, 2013. The girl had claimed that she had given a written complaint to the college principal soon after the alleged incident. She alleged that no action was taken on her complaint.
Despite several attempts, the college principal could not be reached for comment.
