Trendy Du Noon Community Health Centre Set to Open for Patients in August

24 April 2014

Nominated as a World Capital Design 2014 Project

The R83 million-Du Noon Community Health Centre is at present under construction and completion is expected at the end of May 2014. The facility will be opened to patients by August this year.

Western Cape Health Minister, Theuns Botha said that the opening of the Du Noon Community Health Centre will assist in the great need for health services in the area, and also decrease the patient load at Somerset hospital. "At present patients are treated at the temporary Du Noon health facility".

The capital budget for the health centre is R68 million, and the health technology budget is R15.155 million.
Construction commenced in September 2012. Designed by Martin Kruger and Associates Architect, the new health facility has been nominated a World Design Capital project for its innovative design. The facility covers more than 4000 square metres.

It’s nomination as a World Design Capital project was welcomed by Minister Theuns Botha who said, "It demonstrates the fact that our newly constructed health facilities meet international standards and trends,  including incorporating  green technology such as water and electricity usage at the facility being  environmentally-friendly.”

Once completed the new health centre, situatedon Potsdam Road adjacent to the Killarney Industrial area will be highly accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, commuters and BRT users.

The design of the building was conceived "as a city", with central meeting and waiting spaces and internal ‘streets’ connecting the various medical units.

When the facility open to patients this year, the number of staff at the facility will be around  40, and will be increased incrementally to 189 staff members by April 2015.
