Mumbai: Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has demanded that the state election commission take action against BJP’s Gopal Shetty, his rival from the Mumbai North constituency, in connection with an alleged land grabbing case in Borivli. BJP MLA Shetty has repudiated Nirupam’s allegations.
In a letter to Avinash Dhakne, returning officer for Mumbai North, Nirupam’s chief election agent Bharat Parekh has referred to a recent order by the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Borivli.
The court, in response to a private complaint lodged by Rita Dadarkar accusing Shetty of grabbing a plot of land, instructed Borivli police to file an FIR against Shetty and six others, Parekh said. Parekh asked the state poll watchdog to initiate action against Shetty and issue similar instructions to Borivli police. At a press conference, Nirupam said there was talk that Shetty was responsible for the mysterious death of Dadarkar’s husband a few years ago.
Refuting Nirupam’s allegations, Shetty said Dadarkar was “in the habit” of maligning his name during election. The case is politically motivated, and Dadarkar’s claims are patently false and mischievous, Shetty said. He produced a copy of a letter sent by Borivli police to him stating that Dadarkar’s husband had died of a liver ailment. “Yet, she continues to make baseless charges against me at Nirupam’s behest,” he added.
