The MFA wants you to name these dogs

Pair of Great Danes, 1907, Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington.Handout

Frida and Diego? Holmes and Watson? Picasso and Monet? Those are just some of the names that people have come up with for two life-size bronze great danes by Boston sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington that now reside in the Museum of Fine Arts’ Calderwood Courtyard. The MFA is running a naming contest for the dogs, and there are already more than 100 suggestions on the museum’s Facebook page. Sandhya Higgins told the MFA to call the dogs “Benson and Bernstein (after Bostonians Frank Benson and composer Leonard Bernstein).” She wrote, “I like the idea of these two ‘guarding’ the art inside and that they are artists in some form or another themselves and that the names represent fine Bostonians in the arts.” Nancy Berliner suggested that the dogs be named “Malcolm and Roger,” an homage to outgoing MFA director Malcolm Rogers . Nancy is obviously buttering up Rogers, who will choose a winner and announce it May 14. Whoever comes up with the winning name will get a free MFA membership.
