Sensex gains 83 points in early trade; ONGC, Wipro lead

Indian equities are trading on positive note on Wednesday. At 9.19 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 83.41 points or 0.37% at 22,841.78 with 22 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 2.00 points or 0.03% at 6,813.35 with 17 components falling.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 25.28 points or 0.11% at 22,783.65.

Sensex Movers

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation contributed rise of 14.82 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (11.76 points), Larsen & Toubro (11.13 points), Tata Consultancy Services (7.51 points) and Mahindra & Mahindra (5.37 points).

However, I T C contributed fall of 3.15 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (2.97 points), H D F C Bank (2.36 points), Hindustan Unilever (2.1 points) and Hero Motocorp (0.95 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.47%), Wipro (1.13%), G A I L (India) (1.02%), Larsen & Toubro (0.97%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.92%), and Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (0.91%).

On the other hand, Hero Motocorp (0.45%), Hindustan Unilever (0.29%), NTPC (0.20%), I C I C I Bank (0.16%), H D F C Bank (0.13%), and I T C (0.13%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.40% and 0.47% respectively.

The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek India (1.22%), A B G Shipyard (0.62%), Allahabad Bank (0.53%), Anant Raj (0.42%) and Aban Offshore (0.27%).

The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.13%), Dr Datsons Labs (0.44%), Alembic Pharmaceuticals (0.35%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.16%) and Advanta (0.16%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Capital Goods index was at 12,685.30, up by 112.00 points or by 0.89%. The major gainers were Larsen & Toubro (0.97%), Alstom T&D India (0.97%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.8%), A B B India (0.78%) and BEML (0.67%).

The IT index was at 8,851.96, up by 53.91 points or by 0.61%. The major gainers were Hexaware Technologies (1.06%), Infosys (0.75%), Oracle Financial Services Software (0.69%), Tech Mahindra (0.34%) and H C L Technologies (0.06%).

The HC index was at 10,588.27, up by 63.07 points or by 0.60%. The major gainers were Divis Laboratories (0.99%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.82%), Aurobindo Pharma (0.78%), Cipla (0.39%) and Biocon (0.22%).

On the other hand, the FMCG index was at 6,947.79, down by 1.76 points or by 0.03%. The major losers were Hindustan Unilever (0.29%), Godrej Consumer Products (0.19%) and I T C (0.13%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 628 advances against 189 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 65.63 million. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 30.46 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 24.72 million) and Shasun Pharmaceuticals (Rs. 22.85 million).

The volume chart was led by Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers with trades of over 1.01 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (0.71 million), Himalya International (0.60 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (0.41 million).
