BHUBANESWAR: The mercury in the state will witness a gradual rise and touch 43 degree Celsius or more at some places including Bhubaneswar by April 29, a forecast by the
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
The forecast for further rise in day temperatures came with at least 14 places recording above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
The day's highest temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius in the state was recorded at Sonepur and Bhawanipatna.
Bhubaneswar, along with Talcher and Balangir, recorded day temperatures of 41.2 degrees Celsius each. The mercury level in the city was four degrees above normal and forced many to remain indoors.
"There will be no respite from the grueling heat. Temperatures rise gradually and reach above 43 degrees Celsius by April 29," said Sarat Sahu, director of the IMD centre here. He said there are also chances of thunder squalls at some places in the state during this period.
Sahu said clear skies, absence of adequate sea breeze and westerly, south westerly, northerly and north westerly wind were some of the factors that supported the gradual rise in day temperatures.
