The recent attacks on Panches and Sarpanches in Kashmir Valley is a cause of concern and it has sent shock waves across the society. Whatever may be the causes of attack, it is clear that militants want to create a fear psychosis among people at a time when Parliamentary elections are round the corner in the state.
It seems that Panches have become a soft target for militants as they want to derail peace process in the State. Defying all the diktats of militants, these people continued to work with missionary zeal to highlight the sufferings of the people by taking on minor development works.
It is, however, reassuring that Panchayat members have expressed that they won’t be cowed down by these attacks.
Meanwhile, Government should ensure that these killings be investigated to expose the people behind such attack as has been demanded by Panches time and again.
In case no security is provided to these people it will give a severe blow to Panchayati Raj movement in the state which had started with much farfare in the State some years back.
