Happy Record Store Day! Tweets from Artists, Retailers, Labels and More
To help celebrate the annual musical holiday, dozens of artists, music retailers, record labels and fans around the world took to Twitter today (April 19) to commemorate Record Store Day.
Happy 7th birthday, Record Store Day!
To help celebrate the annual musical holiday, dozens of artists, music retailers, record labels and fans around the world took to Twitter today (April 19) to commemorate Record Store Day, which was founded in 2007 to help heighten the awareness of independent music stores around.
“The record store made musicians listen beyond themselves,” Public Enemy leader and co-founder Chuck D said earlier this year after being appointed ambassador of Record Store Day 2014. Past ambassadors included Eagles of Death Metal singer Jesse Hughes (2009), Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme (2010), Ozzy Osbourne (2011), Iggy Pop (2012) and Jack White (2013).
“It both complemented and supplemented the radio, in fact the best radio stations in the past followed the vibe of the record stores of their regions, thus growing and nurturing each other,” Chuck D continued. “The fans and listener had everything to gain, and if they wanted to get into making music, the Record Store turned into their first school and sonic passport out.”
Record Store Day 2014 offers a wide variety of exclusive releases, which includes everything from a 7″ David Bowie picture disc, a 12″ of Sam Cooke’s “Ain’t That Good News” and Bruce Springsteen’s “American Beauty” EP to music by Haim, Notorious B.I.G. and Skrillex, has some 450 titles. See a full list here.

Artists scheduled to make to make in-store appearances today include Barenaked Ladies (Sunrise in Toronto), R.E.M.’s Mike Mills (Bullmoose in Scarborough, Maine), Phillip Phillips (Rasputin in Berkeley, Calif.) and Mark Mulcahy (Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn).
Additionally, Jack White will attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest-ever released record, studio-to-store, in the history of mankind. White will take the stage in Third Man’s blue room in its Nashville studios and record direct-to-acetate what will serve as the limited edition version of his next single, a live rendition of the title track from his upcoming LP “Lazaretto.” The masters will be rushed to United Record Pressing, which will immediately begin pressing 45s. The sleeves will be printed from pictures taken at the show. The finished records will be whisked back to Third Man to sell to awaiting fans. As long as there are fans in line waiting to buy the single, United will continue to press and deliver them to Third Man to sell.
