Bid to loot bank aborted but guards heard nothing
BANGALORE: Unidentified men made an abortive bid to loot a branch of State Bank of India's RPC Layout branch in Vijayanagar late on Friday night. The men left apparently after they failed to break into the strong room, where valuables are kept. But surprisingly, guards posted at the branch were clueless about the incident.
"The rear door of the bank's branch which the culprits broke to gain entry inside was damaged.
And once inside they had damaged the CCTV but could not enter the strong room. We are trying to find out the details from the surveillance camera," said Abhishek Goyal, DCP (West).
Police sources said that guards were posted in front of the bank where the ATM is located, but on questioning they said they never heard anything. "It is very suspicious that the guards did not know or hear a sound while the culprits broke the rear door. We are questioning them," said a police officer.
A senior police officer said that after a spate of ATM robberies and attempts, miscreants are now emboldened and trying their hands on the bank branches themselves. "It is high time banks stepped up their security to curb such a trend. There is also apprehension about the collusion of some security guards whose antecedents are often ignored by the hiring agencies. This should serve as a warning signal," an officer said.
