Fee hike protest
Court issues summons to 63 hostel inmates

Chandigarh, April 18
The UT Social Welfare Department has approached the court against all inmates of working women hostel of Sector 24 to bar them from holding strike on the premises of the hostel. The court has issued summons to all the 63 inmates and has asked them to appear in the court on April 23.

The director of the Social Welfare Department, Rajesh Jogpal, said the department had approached the court because the inmates had held strike on the premises thrice in the last two months, against the hike in their hostel charges. He said inmates could have held the protests in Sector 25 rally ground, which has been especially earmarked for the purpose by the Administration.

Congress leader and an advocate H S Lucky condemned the move and said they will take up the matter with the UT Advisor to the administrator on Monday.

Records of the department revealed that there are 24 rooms in the hostel in which 72 working women can be accommodated.

The UT Social Welfare Department had received the representation from the working women hostel to reconsider the steep hike in the charges.

It was decided that in the next governing board meeting, the issue about reduction in the charges will be tabled and the final decision will be taken by the body accordingly.

Labourer falls from 9th floor, dies

Mohali, April 18
A labourer was killed after he fell from a building, which was under construction, in Peer Muchhalla near here today.

According to reports, Suraj Pal (55) was climbing a staircase when he slipped and fell on iron grills down below. He was reported to have reached the ninth floor when the accident took place.

The accident came to the notice of other workers at the site when they heard a thud and realised that someone had fallen. Pal was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him “brought dead”.

The Zirakpur police have booked the contractor of the construction site, Ram Nath, under Section 304 A of the IPC.

The body has been kept at the mortuary of the Civil Hospital in Zirakpur.

Surveillance team seizes $16,450

Mohali, April 18
A sum of US $16450 was recovered during checking by a election surveillance team at a naka laid in Phase XI here today. Assistant Returning Officer-cum-SDM Lakhmir Singh said the team headed by Surjit Singh, SDE (Agriculture), GMADA, and ASI Sukhwant Singh checked a vehicle at the naka and recovered US $16450 from Dr Sandeep Kumar of Hoshiarpur, who was driving a Maruti car.

According to the directions of the Election Commission, travelling with money more than Rs 50,000 without proper proof or documents was prohibited.

The Assistant Returning Officer said Dr Sandeep Kumar failed to produce the relevant documents.

The currency recovered by the team was handed over to the Income Tax Department for initiating the necessary action.

North and South District Athletics Championship ends on a high note

The Chandigarh North and South District Athletics Championship concluded here at Sports Complex, Sector 7, today. In Chandigarh North district boys, under-14 category, Rajnish Kumar bagged the first spot in 60m. He also secured the first position in 200m race. In the 800m category, Uttam Singh clinched the first spot. In the boys’ u-16 category, Sachin stood first in 100m category. Other events held during the day included shot put and long jump.

Vinit leads Mumbai zone to victory

All-round performance by Mumbai zone skipper Vinit Sarang (55 runs, 3 for 21 runs) enabled his team to defeat Nagpur zone by 8 wickets with 18 balls to spare during the day-night final of the Bank of India Inter-Zone Cricket Tournament, being played at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here today.

The Mumbai zone won the toss and elected to field first. The bowlers bowled a very tight line and length and did not allow the Nagpur zone’s batsmen to score freely. But, Paresh Sutane was unstoppable and played a very calculated unbeaten innings of 97 runs. His innings was studded with eleven wonderful hits to fence and four towering sixes. In the end, the team managed to post a respectable total of 133 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in allotted 20 overs. Vinit Sarang claimed 3 wickets for 21 runs.

Chasing to a good total, Vinit Sarang (55) and Sameer Apte (36) laid a great foundation with a 98-run partnership. Apte was first to depart after being cleaned up by Paresh Sutane. Vinit Sarang missed the line against left arm spinner Umesh Shastri.

Shivam Sharma shines in cricket tourney

Shivam Sharma’s marvellous batting helped DAV Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, beat AVR E-Techno School, Vijayawada, by 39 runs in the Coca-Cola Cricket Cup Under-16 Inter-State Tournament. The match was played at Mahalaxmi ground, Mumbai.

DAV Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, won the toss and opted to bat first. They materialised the fresh pitch and scored 253 runs for eight wickets. Local batsman Shivam Sharma and Amrit Luhana strengthened the batting line-up with their brilliant knocks of 104 and 53 runs, respectively.

For AVR E-Techno School, Vijayawada, S Noor Basha and M Rafi took four and two wickets, respectively.

In reply, AVR E-Techno School, Vijayawada’s UMS Girinath and M Rafi scored impressive 53 and 50 runs, respectively. They lost the match by 39 runs.

Amrit Lubana from DAV school claimed three wickets for the team. Shivam Sharma was adjudged man of the match.
