Sunderland manager Gus Poyet will keep faith with cack-handed keeper Vito Mannone for Saturday's visit to Chelsea.

Mannone gifted Manchester City their last-gasp equaliser with an embarrassing blunder on Wednesday night , but Poyet is backing the former Arsenal man to bounce back at Stamford Bridge.

Poyet said of the incident at the Etihad: “It’s gone now and the quicker that he puts it behind him the better. He just wants to play.

“I need him to stay calm. He looks alright - not delighted , but he looks OK. It was difficult for him on the night, but he will play again and be part of something important.

“I have no doubt that Vito will bounce back and it’s not a problem for me.”

Poyet, a former Chelsea player, insisted his rock-bottom Black Cats go to the Londoners without fear after coming within a few minutes of an away win over one their title rivals just days ago.

He added: “I’m really looking forward to this game because it’s a good way to discover if we have really hit form at the right time – or maybe too late.

“Maybe Sunderland can decide the title one way or another, but we don’t play for anybody apart from ourselves.”
