The Bengali New Year, started on a musical note for members and guests of Tollygunge Club. Singer
Subhamita Bannerjee and percussionist
Bickram Ghosh enthralled the audience with their performances last Wednesday in the Times Poila Boisakh celebrations. Welcoming all to the musical evening, Club president
Sandipan Chakraborty thanked the
Times of India for the initiative and wished all prosperity in the year ahead. Subhamita started off with
Tomar khola hawa and followed it up with
Esho he baisaakh.
The applause that greeted
Brishti paye paye made for a fitting end to her performance. Next up was Bickram Ghosh, who drummed up a storm with Pt S Sekhar and
Satyajit Mukherjee. Jaws dropped as the thundering reverberations from the trio’s jugalbandi pervaded the first day of the year. Humour crept in when Bickram, through percussive bol, described how things change between a couple as years go by.
The evening ended with the guests tucking into a lavish Bengali spread of luchi-begun bhaja, polao, chingrir malaikari, rabri and lots more, with the gusto of a true foodie.
