Asserting that a Modi wave was sweeping across the country, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko on Saturday claimed that the Narendra Modi-headed government at the Centre would not betray the interests of Tamil Nadu as the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government did.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu constituting the MDMK, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Indiya Jananayaka Katchi (IJK), and Kongu Desiya Makkal Katchi had gained the confidence of the people, Mr. Vaiko claimed at an election meeting in Perambalur.

Campaigning for IJK candidate T.R. Pachamuthu contesting on BJP symbol from the Perambalur Parliamentary constituency, Mr. Vaiko took a swipe at the DMK and the AIADMK — terming both parties as “corrupt”. Corruption had taken different forms when both the Dravidian parties ruled the State, he said.

Time had come to release Tamil Nadu from the clutches of corruption and liquor culture, he said and appealed to the electorate to overwhelmingly extend their support to the NDA this time.

Although the DMK and the AIADMK were elected alternately, a new political scenario had emerged in the State this time wherein the NDA had become an alternative to the two main Dravidian parties. Observing that Tamil Nadu had been betrayed on several key issues such as Mullai Periyar, the Cauvery, and attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen, Mr. Vaiko said an overwhelming vote for the NDA combine in Tamil Nadu would ensure justice for Tamil Nadu once Mr. Modi became the Prime Minister.
