Bellchambers returns in VFL, but young Bomber hurt

By Brent Diamond

Essendon ruckman Tom Bellchambers is on track for a possible Anzac Day return against Collingwood following a successful comeback from an ankle injury in the Bombers’ 28-point win against Bendigo in the VFL’s first Good Friday clash at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

However, Bombers youngster Nick O’Brien injured his lower leg in the second term. O’Brien did not return to the field and will have scans to determine the extent of the damage.

Bellchambers, who had his first competitive hit-out since round 21 last season, was serviceable in 70 per cent game time over four quarters in the ruck and up forward.

It didn’t take long for Bellchambers to have an influence with his clinical tap heading into the hands of Ben Duscher, who kicked the Bombers' first. Bellchambers finished with 1.4 after snaring a final-quarter goal from a strong mark.

The 24-year-old had ankle surgery in January but aimed to return to the AFL ranks by next week.

Tayte Pears, who also spent some time up forward, also finished with a late goal.

In front of more than 2000 fans, the Bombers were caught off guard by the Gold in the first half as the home team opened up a 21-point lead late in the second term before the Bombers overcame their inaccuracy.

Josh Mellington’s second goal of the third term gave them the lead. Goals to Johnny Rayner and Alistair Kefford helped it to a 20-point buffer at the final change.

Zach Merrett was also excellent for the Bombers in the 11.25 (91) to 9.9 (63) win.

Dylan Van Unen, emergency for Saturday night’s clash against St Kilda, did not play.
